The Royal Decree was issued approving Law No. 14 of 2020, amending Public Security Law No. 38 of 1965, which included merging the Gendarmerie Forces Command and the Civil Defense Directorate under the umbrella of the Public Security Directorate, which defined force systems, where the duties of the Department of Prevention and Self-Protection were stated as follows :

•  Study the schemes of buildings and commercial, industrial and tourist facilities that the Greater Amman Municipality and other municipalities are required to refer to it to ensure that the requirements of prevention and other means of self-protection are secured from the dangers of fire, in accordance with the specifications prescribed by the legislation in force and control over them after the issuance of the necessary license.
• Ensuring the availability of the requirements of prevention, self-protection means, and means of warning and extinguishing in the shops and industrial professions to approve the establishment of fuel stations, liquefied gas distribution agencies and their warehouses, in accordance with the prescribed conditions of prevention and self-protection.
• approving the licensing of professions related to the manufacture, import, sale, installation, maintenance or control of protective and self-protection materials and equipment in accordance with the instructions.
• Determining preventive measures and means of self-protection for the purpose of granting licenses for the manufacture, storage and sale of explosives, fireworks, chemicals, dangerous materials and others.
