About Us
- Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, Syrian refugees flow began to Jordan in large numbers, especially across the northern borders of the Kingdom due to the security situation inside Syria, as the Kingdom opened its borders to them to provide them with the necessary protection and care.
- Syrian refugees have been received since the beginning of the crisis and have been accommodated in private housing (Al-Bashabesha housing) in the city of Ramtha. In conjunction with the influx of Syrian refugees, they were transferred after being registered by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to the first camp (Al-Zaatari camp) after providing them with basic needs and sheltering them inside the camp, which was built by UNHCR in coordination with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization, as it is the Jordanian government agency concerned with serving Syrian refugees inside the camp at that time.
After the increase in the number of Syrian refugees to the Kingdom, it was necessary to find places to accommodate and them, as the infrastructure was developed in Zaatari camp and the establishment of other camps to accommodate the increasing flows of refugees in accordance with international standards and best practices, as follows:
- Zaatari Camp / Northern Badia - opened on 7/29/2012.
- Garden Camp / Ramtha - opened on 27/7/2012.
- Mraijeeb Al Fhood Camp (Emirati Jordanian Camp) – Zarqa Opened on 10/4/2013
- Azraq Camp / Zarqa - opened on 30/4/2014.
On 13/1/2013, in response to the Syrian refugee crisis in the Kingdom, the Syrian Refugee Camp Affairs Department was established by the decision of the Prime Minister's Office to follow up Syrian refugee affairs and report to the Ministry of Interior.
On 3/26/2014, the name of the department was changed and its jurisdiction was expanded to become the Directorate of Syrian Refugees Affairs, to include all Syrian refugees inside the Kingdom, and its role is not limited to the camps only.
- On October 25, 2020, His Excellency the former Minister of Interior, Tawfiq Al-Halaleh, inaugurated the building of the Directorate of Syrian Refugee Affairs in its current location - Shafa Badran, in the presence of the Director of Public Security, Major General Hussein Al-Hawatmeh.
