Historical background of establishment

1958: the Formation of the Religious Police, headquartered in Holy Jerusalem, with detachments in Petra and Qumran (an archaeological site located on the shores of the Dead Sea south of Jericho), Bethlehem, Jericho and Hebron.

1967: The Religious Police was renamed to the Tourist Police Unit, headquartered in the Amman Tourism Authority building and followed to the Operations Department of the Public Security Directorate.

1988: The unit was renamed to the Tourist Police Department, headquartered at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in Amman.

1990: The Tourism Police Department was followed to the Preventive Security Department.

1994: Establishment of the Tourist Police Department as a unit specialized in tourist security, reporting to the Assistant for Operations and Training.

2020: Merging the (Royal Department for Environment Protection) and (Tourist Police Department) to become one department under the name (Royal Department for Tourism and Environment Protection).

2023: Separation of the Tourist Police Department from the Royal Department of Environment Protection to be independent department under the name of the Tourist Police Department
